CANON 2010 Sep 9-20 Experiment Description:
- Platforms: Western Flyer, Zephyr, Dorado CTD AUV, ESP Drifter
- PIs: Chavez, Worden, Scholin, Rajan
- Date: 2010 Sep 9-20
- The goals of the cruise are several fold:
- Make a CTD section along CalCOFI Line 67 out to 350 nm (station 67-135) to characterize the environment from the eutrophic inshore to the oligotrophic offshore waters.
- Carry out a day-long time series in the offshore waters.
- Return to the mesotrophic waters around station 67-70 and rendezvous with the Zephyr (ship) and Dorado (AUV) and carry out a 5 day ESP drift experiment to characterize the diel cycles in gene expression, growth, production and grazing. The Dorado will map hourly around the ESP from 0600 local to midnight daily.
- The approximate timing of the cruise is for the Flyer to depart Moss Landing on September 9 and reach 67-135 by September 12. After the 24 hour station the Flyer will return to 67-70 and reach this site to begin operations by 0400 on September 14. The deployment of the ESP, Dorado and a CTD cast will be carried out by 0600. If everything goes as planned the ESP will drift for 5 days until September 19. The Dorado will survey a volume of water equivalent to 1 square kilometer hourly to 100 m. Every morning at ~0400 local there will be a deep (500m) CTD and large water collection exercise for diurnal incubations. Every four hours (0800, 1200, 1600, 2000, 2400) the Flyer will make a shallow (100 m) CTD next to the ESP and collect water at a few depths.
